Most altcoins go to zero. But a handful - the ones that built real technology with real adoption - produced returns that dwarf even Bitcoin's impressive gains. Here are five entry points that, in hindsight, were extraordinary opportunities.
1. Ethereum at Launch - August 2015 (~$1)
Entry price: ~$1
All-time high: $4,878 (November 2021)
Peak return: ~4,878x
$1,000 invested in Ethereum at launch in August 2015 would have purchased approximately 1,000 ETH. At the 2021 all-time high of $4,878, that 1,000 ETH was worth $4,878,000. Nearly $5 million from a $1,000 investment.
The risk was real: Ethereum was an unproven experiment in 2015. The DAO hack in 2016 nearly destroyed it (it did lead to the Ethereum/Ethereum Classic split). The ICO crash of 2018 sent ETH down 94% from its peak. Holding through all of that required genuine conviction in Vitalik Buterin's vision.

2. Solana at Launch - April 2020 (~$0.77)
Entry price: ~$0.77
All-time high: $259 (November 2021)
Peak return: ~336x
$1,000 invested in Solana at its April 2020 launch ($0.77) would have purchased approximately 1,299 SOL. At the November 2021 peak of $259, those 1,299 SOL were worth $336,441.
In 2020, Solana was one of dozens of "Ethereum killers" competing for attention. Most of them failed. Solana's key advantage - genuine technical performance at 50,000+ TPS - attracted developers building applications that needed speed. The FTX collapse in 2022 devastated Solana specifically (FTX/Alameda were major backers), but the network survived and recovered to new highs by 2024.

3. Dogecoin at Christmas 2020 (~$0.003)
Entry price: ~$0.003
All-time high: $0.74 (May 2021)
Peak return: ~24,667x
Dogecoin at Christmas 2020 was still just a meme. $1,000 at $0.003 bought approximately 333,333 DOGE. At the May 2021 peak of $0.74, that was worth $246,667.
The risk here was obvious - Dogecoin had zero fundamental value beyond community and memes. The entire return was speculative. But the return was real for those who sold near the peak. Those who held expecting $1+ saw their gains evaporate.

4. Solana New Year 2023 (~$9.96)
Entry price: ~$9.96
Price in early 2024: $200+
Return: ~20x
This is a more recent example. After the FTX collapse, Solana was widely written off as "Sam Bankman-Fried's blockchain." The prevailing opinion in January 2023 was that Solana's institutional backing had evaporated and the chain would slowly die.
Instead, Solana's developer community rebuilt, new applications emerged (Phantom wallet improvements, new DeFi protocols, the "blink" social payments), and SOL surged from $10 to over $200 by early 2024. A 20x return for those who bought while everyone was pessimistic.

5. Ethereum DeFi Summer 2020 (~$235)
Entry price: ~$235
All-time high: $4,878 (November 2021)
Return to ATH: ~20x
June 2020 was the beginning of "DeFi Summer" - but at the time, most people didn't know it. Compound had just launched liquidity mining. Uniswap was growing. Ethereum was "too expensive" at $235 for many retail investors who had watched it crash from $1,400 to $80.
$1,000 at DeFi Summer entry prices bought about 4.25 ETH. By November 2021, those 4.25 ETH were worth $20,731. A 20x return - driven by genuine utility growth, not speculation.

The Pattern
Looking at these five entries, the pattern is consistent: the best altcoin entry points were during periods of maximum fear or obscurity. Not during bull markets when assets were getting mainstream attention.
This is easy to say in hindsight. In practice, buying assets during periods of maximum pessimism requires conviction that the underlying technology has real merit - and that conviction is hard to maintain when every headline is negative.
